A Gaze That Stays on You as It Turns Cold

In a dream of being hated, the other person is looking at you. Your eyes meet, yet the face is hard, the words have thorns, and when you step closer they step back. You are not unnoticed; you are noticed and pushed away all the same, and that is the core of this dream's sting. The dislike in the dream reads as a scene that draws, in strong lines, your distance from others and your interest in how you are judged.

The face of the person who disliked you in the dream reads like a name tag pointing to the relationship your feelings are turned toward. In a relationship with someone you want to be close to, or whose opinion matters to you, is there a word left unsaid or an exchange that still bothers you? What stays after waking may be less the glare than the back moving away.

Cold Words and Refusals Made of Gestures

  • Being hated by friends - A scene of someone familiar suddenly turning distant. Turned-down plans or eyes that slide away in the group echo the work of measuring that friendship again.
  • Being hated by an old friend - Someone you lost touch with treats you coldly over something from back then. Being blamed for past words is tied to the memory of a parting never fully settled.
  • Being hated by your crush - Someone you want to approach clearly keeps you at a distance. Having your interest seen through and avoided is the shape of picturing in advance what would follow a confession.
  • Being hated by a boyfriend or partner - The person closest to you turns away without giving a reason. Over that back receding, never turning when you call out, falls the word you have yet to say in that relationship.
  • Being hated by an ex - A scene of someone from a finished relationship rejecting you again. A reunion where you are brushed off echoes the work of closing that story for good.
  • Being disliked by the opposite sex - Faceless people of the opposite sex turn away one by one each time you come near. Being avoided not by one person but by the opposite sex as a whole turns a vague concern about how they see you into the scenery itself.
  • Being hated at work - Coworkers or a boss talk behind your back and leave you out of tasks. The sigh heard each time you speak in a meeting reflects concern about how you are judged and where you stand at work.
  • Family members who hate you - Parents, siblings or in-laws regard you with distaste. A chill hanging only over your seat at the table is the shape of family roles and expectations gathered in one chair.
  • Being hated by all around you - Cold looks wait wherever you go, and the air of each shop or room you enter stiffens at once. Being hated by the whole room speaks of how braced you are against people's eyes as a whole rather than against one person.
  • Being told to your face that they hate you - A scene of rejection spoken in words rather than shown. Having the reasons listed is tied to sensitivity about the side of you those reasons point to.
  • Strangers who hate you - Someone you merely pass glares at you and vanishes into the crowd before you can ask why. At the center of this dream of hostility without a reason is concern about how your behavior is received where you cannot see.
  • Being rejected by a cat or other animal - A cat you reach to pet runs off and hisses at you from the top of a wall. Being refused by one who shares no language is tied to the confusion of not knowing how to approach, with no means to explain yourself.

The Distance of Being Seen and Pushed Away

In a dream about being ignored, the other person's reaction disappears: you speak and get no answer, as if you were transparent. In a dream of being hated, the reaction comes back stronger. You are glared at, answered back, avoided, and so your presence is recognized but placed on the side of rejection.

A betrayal dream centers on someone trusted breaking a promise. A dream about being abandoned pictures someone who was with you going on ahead and leaving you behind. A dream of being hated is the form in which the relationship continues while only the other's feeling cools, centered less on a single blow than on a change of temperature.

The Eve of a Gathering and the Night After You Said Too Much

When glaring eyes, a turned shoulder or a sigh meant to be overheard appear in the dream, other people's opinions may be a close concern in that phase. Examples are just after joining a new workplace or class, the days before a reunion with a group, or the time ahead of a confession or an important talk. A dream of being hated by someone after you said too much in public or parted with them on bad terms is a continuation of this phase too.

Conversely, in a dream of being hated by someone during a phase when you decide to put distance between yourself and them, the wish to pull away may be drawn as a plot in which the other pulls away. The dream then is a scene of weighing again what you decided. Standing on the side of the one who is hated, the dream mirrors the hesitation of the one who leaves.

Estimating How Liked You Are After a Conversation

The psychologist Erica Boothby and colleagues reported in a 2018 paper, "The Liking Gap in Conversations: Do People Like Us More Than We Think?", a tendency for people, after a conversation, to estimate that they were liked less than they actually were, and named that gap the liking gap. It was found between strangers and between students who shared a dorm room for a school year. The study also showed that the other person's signals of liking went unnoticed by the one receiving them.

Set beside that gap in estimates, the cold look in the dream reads as something separate from the judgment the other person sends. What the dream draws is not the inside of the other person but the scorecard you keep yourself. What the liking gap research dealt with was not dreams. Here its view is used only as a clue.

What the Stated Reasons Said

In the dream, the reasons for the dislike are sometimes said aloud. They are concrete ones: you talk too much, you never notice anything, I cannot forgive that remark. They can be read less as real complaints than as words reflecting a side of yourself you worry about.

There are also dreams of being hated with no reason given. Then the lack of an explanation is the center of the scene. The plain fact that others' feelings cannot be fully seen from outside takes an uneasy form in the dream. A dislike with a reason and one without leave different threads to follow after waking.

The Usual Greeting the Next Time You Meet

At a station gate or the entrance to work, there are moments when you meet the person who hated you in the dream. Seeing them with that cold face still in your head, their usual greeting may feel a little unexpected.

The person in the dream moved according to your own estimate. The tone of voice and the expression of the real person reach you from their side, apart from that estimate. Exchanging an ordinary greeting lets you set the dream's scorecard beside the actual response of the one in front of you. The words heard in the dream and the voice of that greeting, even from the same person, arrive from different places.
