A Borderless Backdrop Filling Everything Overhead

In a dream, the sky is the scenery that shows, as it is, a vastness beyond your reach. It has no outline like a building or a person and spreads behind the story, so its color and light set the air of the whole dream. A dream in which the sky itself stays in memory as the main figure reads as a scene where the gaze turns toward a wider outlook than what is at hand, and toward how bright the road ahead looks.

Was the sky you looked up at in the dream clear, or was it overcast? In a phase when the future looks clear and in one when nothing can be seen ahead, the same sky takes on a different tone in the dream. Even the color of the hour, dawn, noon, or dusk, is steeped in how you sense the landscape in front of you.

The Colors of the Sky You Looked Up At

  • A cloudless blue sky - Unobstructed brightness spreads across everything overhead. Simply gazing at a beautiful sky matches the sense of an opening outlook, or the lightness after closing a chapter.
  • An evening sky or sunset - At the end of the day, the sky's colors shift from orange toward purple. A dream of watching the orange fade draws, side by side, the reluctance of something ending and the switch toward another time.
  • A gray sky about to rain - A scene of light without a visible sun, an undecided brightness. Standing still beneath it, umbrella still closed in your hand, carries the weight of a decision you keep putting off.
  • A dark, heavy sky with black clouds - Though it is daytime, the sky has turned as dark as night. Black clouds hanging low are tied to worries without a clear shape covering everything above.
  • A sky full of stars - Countless lights are scattered through the dark. In a dream of standing frozen beneath them, your own smallness and a quiet wonder at the light still visible sit side by side in one view.
  • A red sky - With a red unlike any sunset, the whole familiar sky is dyed. This strange change over uneasy crowds is tied to bracing for something that shakes the base of daily life.
  • A pink or purple sky - A scene wrapped in a soft, unusual color rarely seen in waking life. The time spent entranced is a moment of reverie and longing, a little apart from practical steps.
  • A sparkling sky or a light streaking across it - Specks or lines of light appear here and there across the sky. Looking up in surprise mirrors an unexpected insight, or something like a message arriving from far away.
  • Pictures or patterns in the sky - Clouds or light form a shape that seems to depict something. Trying to read it is tied to giving a name to a vague hunch.
  • Flying through the sky - A scene of entering the sky you once looked up at. Seeing the ground grow small reflects the wish to step out of your usual role and see the whole.
  • Passing clouds - Clouds move slowly as they change shape. Following them with your eyes, the dream becomes a scene of seeing off changes you cannot stop.
  • The sky as a heavenly place - Beyond the sky spreads a place where the departed or the sacred dwell. In Spanish one word names both the sky and heaven, and in dreams that follow this double meaning, feelings for someone out of reach or a prayer are entrusted to the sky.

Lead and Backdrop

A cloud dream turns the gaze to shapes and movement in the sky. In a star dream a single point of light in the dark takes the lead, and in a sun dream, the source of heat and brightness. A sky dream looks at the whole expanse that holds them, centered less on one thing than on the light and tone of everything together. This also sets it apart from a flying dream, whose reading centers on your body floating and the freedom to move.

In the same night scene, fixing your eyes on one star stays close to the star dream reading, while being overwhelmed by darkness and breadth stays close to the sky reading. Noticing a cloud's shape or the blue behind it are both events inside the sky. What caught your eye first when you looked up decides which dream you read it as.

The Sky Above a Big Choice

What shows in the dream sky is not that day's weather but how much your direction and outlook are swaying. In dreams from a phase of facing a big choice about school, housing or work, the sky's clearing and clouding are tied to how the road looks that day. A dream of a clear sky can also come right after a worry is resolved. Dreams of looking up at the sky of an unknown place before a trip or a move belong to this phase too.

Dreams of rapidly shifting weather, or of a clear sky turning dark all at once, coincide with the mood of a phase spent moving between optimism and worry. If the color changed partway through, which sky you watched longer, the one before or the one after, also serves as a marker. A dark sky pierced by light and a bright sky slowly shadowed share a change but run in opposite directions.

Vastness and the Rearranging of a View

The psychologists Dacher Keltner and Jonathan Haidt examined awe in a 2003 paper, "Approaching awe, a moral, spiritual, and aesthetic emotion", and placed two qualities at its center. One is perceived vastness, something felt as far larger than oneself. The other is the need to rearrange one's frame when an experience does not fit the usual way of seeing the world.

A sky dream, brought together with the idea of this paper, which does not deal with dreams, is the very stage of awe. In a dream where you catch your breath before an endless blue or a sky full of stars, the size of your worries is measured again beside the breadth of the sky. If a nearby problem looks a little different on waking, that change reads as a small rearrangement set off by the sky in the dream.

From Looking Up to Swimming Through the Sky

In a sky dream, besides the color, the reading turns on where you were. From the ground, the sky appears as a distant outlook or an ideal still out of reach. When flying, the sky is a place you have entered, not a far goal but a wide space you move through. Watching it from a tall building or a mountain sits in between, at a height that has nearly left the ground to look far ahead.

A phase of dreams in which you only look up and one of dreams in which you launch into the sky mark different distances from the landscape ahead. The difference between staying to watch and stepping inside is drawn across the great backdrop of the sky.

The Color Near the Horizon

The horizon is the line where the sky and the land appear to meet. It is also the line where the far outlook touches the life at your feet. In a sky dream, you may remember the color right overhead yet forget the one near the horizon. The color of that edge in the dream coincides with how the landscape ahead joins the days in front of you.

If you look at the sky through the window in the morning, what is there is that day's color, different from the dreamed one. Pale morning blue, cloudy white or the gray before rain, it shifts on its own, unrelated to the dream. How much of the vastness you looked up at in the dream can you carry into the day at your feet?
