The Inner Judge Living in Your Mind
The superego is the psychic function governing morality, conscience, and ideals in Freud's structural theory. It forms through internalizing parental discipline and social rules during childhood. The inner voice saying "you should" or "you must not" is the superego at work. The superego has two aspects: the conscience, which prohibits and punishes, and the ego ideal, which presents an image of how one should be. An excessively strict superego leads to guilt and self-criticism, while one too weak results in inability to control impulses.
How the Superego Appears in Dreams - Teachers, Police, Gods
In dream divination, the superego often appears symbolically as authoritative figures. Dreams of being scolded by a strict teacher, chased by police, or judged by a god or judge may be the superego personified in dreams. Particularly when you feel guilt in a dream despite having done nothing wrong in reality, the superego may be excessively activated. Dreams of being late for exams or standing on stage unprepared can also be interpreted as reflecting the superego's demand to try harder.
What Happens When the Superego Is Too Strict
Excessive superego strictness causes various psychological problems: perfectionism, chronic guilt, inability to forgive oneself, hypersensitivity to others' evaluations. In dreams, these manifest as themes of being criticized no matter what, having no escape, or being constantly watched. Crucially, superego standards are not necessarily rational. When parental values internalized in childhood remain unchanged, you may be judging yourself by standards inappropriate for your adult self.
Updating the Superego - Liberation from Outdated Norms
Because the superego forms in childhood, strict childhood standards may persist into adulthood unchanged. Psychological growth requires updating superego standards to match your current self. Specifically, notice the "should" voices within you and verify whether they are truly appropriate for who you are now. Dreams of arguing back at authority figures, claiming innocence in a trial, or escaping from a watcher can be read as healthy rebellion against the superego's outdated standards. When such dreams appear, it may be an opportune time to reconsider the irrational shoulds that bind you.
